*The flag's official name in Japanese is Nisshōki (日章旗, "sun flag") but the flag is more commonly known as Hinomaru (日の丸, "sun circle")
*Adopted on August 13,1999
*White with a large red disk in the center respresents the sun
*The red large disk represents hardiness, bravery, strength & valour
*The white background represents peace and honesty
*Legend says that the flag originates in the 13th century when a Buddhist priest called Nichiren offered the sun disc flag to the Emperor of Japan in honour of the sun goddess Amaterasu who was believed to have been the Emperor's ancestor
